accessory facial nucleus

The term accessory facial nucleus refers to a small cluster of neurons dorsal to the facial nucleus in the pontine tegmentum. It has been reported for the human ( Crosby-1962 ), rat ( Swanson-1998 ) and mouse ( Dong-2004 ). Functionally it belongs to the somatic motoneuron pools of the subcortical motor system ( Swanson-2004 ).
