The term olfactory system (OLS) refers to a histologically and functionally defined set of unimodal sensory structures involved in the processing of oderant information and the sense of smell ( Yilmazer-Hanke-2012 Buck-2013 ). It is present in the human ( Buck-2013 ), macaque ( Price-1990 ), rat ( Swanson-2004 ) and mouse ( AMBA-2024 ). It is composed bilaterally of the olfactory receptors OLR), olfactory nerve (1n), olfactory bulb (OLB), olfactory tract (oltr) and olfactory cortex (OLC). While the relative sizes and locations of structures is quite different in the brains of primates and rodents, the connections and physiological functions are similar. Updated 27 July 2024.
