The term area 26 refers to the most caudal portion of area 29 in retrosplenial cortex of the human. It is a very narrow band located in the isthmus of the cingulate gyrus as it curves around the splenium of the corpus callosum. It is bounded internally by the splenium and externally by area v23a of the ventral posterior cingulate cortex. It consists of a single external granular layer (IV), which is continuous rostrally with layer III/IV of area 29l. It has no equivalent in the macaque ( Vogt-2012 ) or the rat ( Paxinos-2009b ) or mouse ( Hof-2000 ).
